Don't Follow the Path
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson A learning experience. A humbling beating at the hands of his betters. The first step or stumble on his way to greatness. That was what most experts thought this second round playoff series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons would be for Lebron James. Lebron had something different in mind. Michael Jordan, to who Lebron is so often compared, also faced a stifling defense in Detroit jerseys. "The Bad Boys" not only beat Jordan, but humbled him. It took Jordan four trips to the playoffs to fight through Detroit. Many expected Lebron to do better, but who expected this possibility? With only three NBA seasons behind him, with his first playoff game less than a month in the history books, Lebron James and his Cavaliers are staring at the Conference Finals. And here's a little secret...they could win that, too. How did this happen? Where did the Pistons go wrong? Or more appropriately where did the Cavs go right? A lot of things are playing into Cleveland's favor, and are setting up the possibility for an unbelievable start to King James Playoff Career. 1. Team Unity - the loss of Larry Hughes' brother Justin, has been a focal point for the camaraderie and loyalty of this team. The way the organization has handled Hughes' absence, and the touching picture of the team traveling to the funeral during the playoffs has been an example to other sports teams. Lebron's assertion during last night's post-game conference that "This is just basketball, it ain't life or death." Show his wisdom is behind on his years not only on the court but off. The strength of the team to pull through without the presence of Hughes' shows that the role players on this team know where they fit in and are always willing to contribute. 2. Outstanding bench play - Heading into the playoffs the Cavs were labeled "young" and "inexperienced" but players like Drew Gooden, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Eric Snow have playoff experience and they are showing it. The combo of Anderson Varejao and Ilgauskas at the center position has allowed Cleveland to control the boards, and out Piston the Pistons. Flip Murray and Eric Snow, while outmatched by Billups and Hamilton from Detroit have not conceded defeat in the backcourt forcing the Piston guards to play a solid 48 minutes. Thus far, they have not been up to the task. 3. Underestimation - The Pistons this season have played with a chip on their shoulder and a swagger in their step. And no one in the Association deserved either more. The Pistons were pretty much the universal favorite to go all the way this year. They won two years ago and last year were just a few bounces away from a repeat. They have dominated the Eastern Conference for three seasons and only a couple of teams in the West posed any threat whatsoever. After the departure of Larry Brown and the entry of Flip Saunders, the Detroit offense (once on lifesupport) was now off to the races. If they didn't want to shut you down, they could now shoot the lights out. They looked unstoppable. But no one told that to Number 23. Actually I think a few too many people told that to the Pistons. They bought into their own hype, overlooked the Cavs and maybe (just maybe) cost themselves another trip to the Finals. 4. Leadership even without Experience - Lebron has not had an outstanding offensive performance in the series so far. He has taken bad shots at times and turned over the ball a few more times than Coach Mike Brown would like. He has however led his team from the first minute of Game 1. Lebron knew this was a seven game series. He knew there would be times for adjustments (on both sides of the court). He never got down, and because of it, his teammates started believing. Here is the difference between Kobe and Lebron. Kobe's teammates believe he can do it. Lebron's believe WE can do it. Nailbiting habits aside, Lebron has handled himself like a seasoned pro, and has instilled a lot of confidence in the journeyman players of Cleveland. 5. Excellent Coaching - Other than the presence of the Chosen one, this is Cleveland's greatest asset. Mike Brown has done a fabulous job on the bench during the series. He has constantly monitored and adjusted Cleveland's gameplan finding what works, never relying on one point of attack and generally out coaching Flip Saunders. One wonders what Larry Brown would have done with this series. I'm not for quick dumps of new coachs but Flip has failed at his first big test. Mike Brown, meanwhile, is due for a raise. This is not to imply that the series is over. The Pistons could rediscover their fire. The Cavs could buy into THEIR hype. Lebron could get injured. Larry Hughes could come back into the lineup and break up the team's chemistry. But I doubt it. I believe Lebron and the Cavs will beat Detroit, but they've got their work cut out for them. And they must get the job done at home. Here's what it will take to give the Cavs a shot at Shaq Diesel and D-Wade. 1. Stick to the Gameplan - The tendency is going to be towards a high powered game at home. The Q (Quicken Loans Arena) has never seen a game like this, and the fans are going to bring the house down. It would be easy for Cleveland to get into a run and gun game with all that excitement, but the Pistons will outshoot them if they do. The Cavaliers need to dance with the one that brought them. Defense. Contest every shot. Grab every loose ball, and don't let this opportunity slip by. 2. Dominate the Wallace's - The package of Varejao, Ilgauskas, Gooden, and Marshall can and have dominated the Piston big men. They are bigger, stronger and faster inside. They have to continue to act like it. 3. Play Hughes (if at all) Off the Bench - If Larry Hughes' returns to the series, he shouldn't interfere with the current rotation. His emotions after his brother's funeral might help him, bringing him his first major offensive output of the playoffs, but that needs to come off the bench. Let the starters that have done so well in the past three games continue and work Larry back into rotation slowly. 4. This one is essential. Let Lebron be Lebron. King James has managed this series very well so far, picking his spots and letting the game come to him. He must maintain that attitude. Don't force shots, don't settle for jumpers even though they often fall. Drive to hole, get the Pistons in foul trouble, and give himself better shots at the basket. If Lebron is Lebron then the Cavs are winners.
Lebron and the Cavs are way ahead of schedule. The heir to Jordan's throne is not exactly following in his footsteps, but maybe that's a good thing. All hail King James.

I Like to do It in a Dark Room With Lots of People Around
...watch movies, you pervert! Seriously, you people are screwed up. It's that time again. Tom Cruise hatches a baby and a movie, (do scientologists lay eggs or do they have live births?) A few superheroes come out to play, and all the films too dumb to win Oscars are released within the next four to five months. I would ask what you guys are excited about seeing, but this isn't really about your opinion, now is it? Kidding, kidding. Plenty of room for you to strike back with your opinions below. Now on to my Top ten:
1. X-men 3: The Last Stand -- Alright so that's maybe the worst subtitle imaginable (X-men 3: Some Crap Explodes or X-men 3: Let's Hope Ratner Doesn't Screw This Up! would also be bad ones), but still it's my favorite superheroes played by some of my favorite actors. I was completely heartbroken when Bryan Singer left this film to go shoot "The Big Blue Boyscout" (more on him later), but the trailers have looked really good. Here's hoping Fox pulls their heads out of their butts and realizes this can't be the Last Stand. May 26
2. The Davinci Code -- Also known as the Jesus had a baby movie. Even though the other book (Angels and Demons) was a better story, this is an exciting, original thriller. Tom Hanks, Audrey Tatou, Jean Reno, Ian McKellen, and Alfred Molina all star. Could the have assembled a better cast? Ron Howard is running this show, and it should not let down the millions of fans of the books, or the millions of Americans too lazy or illiterate to read it. (I'm talking to you). May 19
3. Superman Returns -- This is the project that cause the downfall of the X-men franchise so it better be damn good. Bryan Singer seems to know how to handle angst in comic book stories but I can't imagine Superman being very angsty. Brandon Routh (an unknown) plays the Man of Steel, while Kate Bosworth is Lois Lane, and Kevin Spacey (bald as a baby) is Lex Luthor. Why they didn't make this a follow up to Smallville and use Tom Welling (an excellent Clark Kent) I'll never know. All I do know, is that if this sucks, I'm going after Singer...seriously. June 30
4. A Prairie Home Companion -- Lindsay Lohan + Robert Altman + Garrison Keiler = I'm there. June 9
5. Nacho Libre -- Written and directed by Jared Hess, the guy behind Napolean Dynamite, starring the funniest man alive, Jack Black. The storyline centers around a Mexican Priest (Black) that moonlights as a professional wrestler to raise money for an orphanage. How can this not be laugh out loud funny? June 16
6. Cars -- In my opinion, Pixar has never made a less than perfect film. I feel this way about the Coen brothers, also. It's not that their films are all the best films ever made, it's just that they are as good as they possibly could be. John Lassetter, the new head of Disney Animation and Imagineering directs for the first time since Toy Story 2. Now bring on The Incredibles: The Attack of the Underminer! June 9
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest -- They could have titled this one "Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow Cuts his Toenails" and I would still be crazy excited for this movie. Johnny Depp rules! There, I'm a fanboy. July 7
8. A Scanner Darkly -- Based on a Phillip K. Dick story (Blade Runner, Minority Report, pretty much ever science fiction that wasn't Asimov), this one stars every b-list actor in Hollywood but it's also animated. Weird. Watch the trailer and tell me you don't want to see this...now. July 7
9. Lady in the Water -- Here's the deal. I liked The Village, I loved Unbreakable. If you ask me the only time Shyamalan has dropped the ball is in the last thirty minutes of Signs (that, I just didn't get). Also this stars everybody's favorite ugly star, Paul Giamatti and the soon to Gwen Stacy, Bryce Dallas Howard. July 21
10. Clerks II -- One of my favorite directors, and MySpace friends, goes back to the well after a disapointing run at the mainstream. I loved Jersey Girl, but apparently I'm alone on that one. Dante, Randall, Jay, Silent Bob and cameos galore from the likes of Matt Damon, Ben (I should play a young Capt. Kirk) Affleck, and Jason (the man) Lee. That is his middle name by the way. August 18
I know I left a ton out, so here's an also ran list:
Mission Impossible III (M.I.:III or whatever the hell they're marketing it as) -- This is the movie that really made me drop this post today. It officially kicks off the summer with everyone's favorite Scientologist (no not Travolta) facing off against Capote himself. This three ringed circus is helmed by Mr. Alias/Lost J.J. Abrams. I'm there. May 5
Little Man -- God help me, but I thought the trailer for this Wayans bros. film was hilarious. July 5
The Omen -- I've never even seen all of the original but they're releasing it on 06/06/06, that's great marketing. June 6
Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby -- I'm not the biggest Will Farrell fan (see above about Jack Black being the funniest man alive), and I can't stand NASCAR, but for some reason this looks like it could be very cool. August 4
Snakes on a Plane -- While not only being the most descriptive title of a movie ever, this is also the most intriguing. To put it in equation form: snakes+plane+Sam Jackson= Cool. August 18
Whoo...busy summer ahead of us, huh? Alright, who am I kidding? I'm going to see, like, three of these movies in the theatre and then I'll catch the rest on DVD. Oh, I'm pathetic.
Alright, so what is your list? Let me know the films you are most likely to make time to see. In case you're not getting the hint...COMMENT, PUNKS! And don't forget to make with the kudos.

We are All Witnesses
First off there is a milestone I need to mention. Today (May 3) marks the beginning of my third month as a "Blogger." I've enjoyed it immensely and since the MySpace blog has more than 460 hits and the Blogger page has just over 260, it seems you guys enjoy it, too. You keep reading, I'll keep writing.
For those of you that don't watch "Lost," I can't tell you how much I suggest you change that immediately. This is coming from a guy that loves "Sopranos", and "West Wing", "Deadwood" and "24". "Lost" is TV at it's best. I don't want to go into spoilers, but tonight's episode in particular was excellent. Looking forward to the final three weeks. But that's not what this blog is about.
I'm a Michael Jordan fan. I grew up watching His Airness reign over the NBA leaving Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers shaking their heads in disgust, knowing they'd never get a championship. Barkley, Ewing, Malone. Seriously it's a who's who of basketball. I saw every championship he won and there was never any doubt in my mind that he was and would always be the greatest basketball player ever.
But I didn't even really know the game. I was so young. In 1991 as Jordan and the new look Bulls took on the Lakers I was ten years old. Even when he retired and came back, winning in 1996-1998. In '98 I hadn't even graduated high school. My point is this, my appreciation for the nuances of the game has grown considerably since Jordan's last run. I know the ins and outs of basketball as well as any casual fan and better than most. All this knowledge hasn't lessened my appreciation and admiration for the Great One's accomplishments, it's strengthened them. And this is why I am so proud to be a Witness.
Anybody who knows b-ball knows I'm referencing the great Nike ads celebrating Lebron James' first playoff series. A co-worker of mine (Fox, for those in the know) likes to rib me about my unabashed Lebron love. He is a Jordan fan like me, and he bristles a bit at the constant references to Bron-Bron's "Jordanesque" play. Without a doubt Lebron is the greatest 21 year old to ever hold a basketball. In only three years in the league he has asserted himself as a (if not THE) premier player. The youngest Rookie of the Year, the youngest All-Star MVP, only the third player to debut into the playoffs with a triple-double, only the fourth player to average better than 30 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the season. The others who accomplished that feat: Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, and Michael Jordan. In his third season and first trip to the playoffs, he leads the league in playoff scoring and is second in fourth quarter scoring (although that stat got a lot closer after tonights game). Lebron has shown an ability to grow as a player and a leader that leaves me no doubt, that he will become one of the greatest players ever. And I get to watch. I get to watch his whole career, understanding the importance of every record he shatters. I get to appreciate his awareness of and admiration for those that came before him. I get to tell my kids about how I watched King James drop a triple double his first night in the postseason. I am a Witness. And damn, am I proud.
